Governor says investment already vindicated, signs MoU with Nigerian Air Force for immediate deployment
……Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has taken delivery of two surveillance aircraft, one year after announcing plans to deploy aerial assets to strengthen intelligence gathering and security operations across the state.The aircraft touched down on Tuesday at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Alakia, Ibadan, marking a major boost to the state’s security architecture.

Speaking shortly after inspecting the aircraft, Governor Makinde said the acquisition was a deliberate, strategic decision to address the challenge of securing Oyo State’s vast landmass, which cannot be effectively covered by ground personnel alone.“When we took the decision to purchase these surveillance aircraft, it was because of the sheer landmass and size of our state. We knew that we had to complement the boots on the ground,” the governor stated.
Makinde noted that while his administration could not have predicted the recent wave of security breaches, including abduction incidents, the investment in aerial surveillance has proved timely and necessary.“We didn’t know what was going to happen. I’ve seen people criticize us and ask, ‘Where is the aircraft?’ But we planned for it so that we would be able to cover as much of the state’s landmass as possible within the shortest time,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction at the arrival of the aircraft, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to taking tough but necessary decisions in the interest of residents, stressing that no meaningful development can occur in an atmosphere of insecurity.
“I’m glad that now it’s here, and I believe we will always do what is right in the interest of our people. In an atmosphere of insecurity, you can hardly do anything. Now, our children are back, our teachers are back, and we’re moving on with our plans,” he added.
The governor disclosed that the aircraft will become operational immediately, adding that the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Air Force for their effective deployment and management.
“We’re hitting the ground running. You can see the aircraft was flown by Air Force pilots. We have negotiated an MoU with the Nigerian Air Force, and we will be working together,” Makinde said.He assured residents of the state that his government will continue to prioritize the protection of lives and property.
“My message to the people of Oyo State is that their government will always be there to serve them,” he said.The deployment of the surveillance aircraft is expected to significantly enhance aerial reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and rapid response coordination as the state intensifies its onslaught against banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
