…Kokoro says late Olubukola Olomola (Baba Ara) shaped his sound in Kano and Sagamu, laments piracy, promises to rebuild the legend’s legacy
Popular gospel musician Prince Segun Adewole, better known as Kokoro, says he was never raised to compete with the late music icon Roland Olubukola Olomola, fondly called Baba Ara. Speaking on the Wealthcome Entertainment Show ”ARIYA ORIN” Anchored by Olusina Olabode Popularly known as Omo Iya Sina on Adamimogo 105.1FM Ibadan on Thursday, Kokoro described Baba Ara as a father and teacher who molded his talent, not a rival.
“I learned under him for years in Kano and later in Sagamu when he relocated in the 80s,” Kokoro told listeners. “Baba Ara was never a competitive musician. His tutelage shaped my music production skills.”
The singer said the old school way of making music, though slow, built creativity, discipline, and loyalty among artistes, marketers, and producers.
“Those days made us value the work. You couldn’t just rush and drop a song,” he added.
Kokoro also raised concerns over the state of Nigeria’s creative industry. He blamed the weak operations of the Nigerian Copyright Commission for the rise of piracy that has left many artistes broke.
He also pointed to social media and modern technology, saying while they help with “hybrid music production,” they have also made it easy for young artistes to copy instead of creating.
“My advice to the younger ones is this: don’t imitate without creativity and commitment. Build your own sound,” he warned.
The Kokoro hitmaker gave flowers to Ibadan-based presenter Olusina Olabode, popularly called Omo Iya Sina, for consistently promoting both upcoming and established artistes.
He assured fans of “continued beautiful rhythms” and made a vow: to rebuild and sustain Baba Ara’s legacy for the next generation.
