The Super Eagles are facing a major crisis ahead of their quarter-final match against Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. Players and coaches have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakesh, citing unpaid bonuses for their four wins so far in the tournament.
The team, which has won all four matches and scored the most goals, is demanding payment of their bonuses, which include $30,000 for each group stage win and $12,500 for their Round of 16 victory over Mozambique. The total amount owed to each player is around $80,000, considering goal bonuses and other incentives.
The Nigerian government has assured that the bonuses will be paid, with the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, stating that the payments are being processed and should reflect in the players’ accounts soon. The Super Eagles have since resumed training and are expected to travel to Marrakech for Saturday’s match.
This isn’t the first time the team has staged a protest over unpaid bonuses. In November 2025, they boycotted training ahead of a World Cup playoff against Gabon, but the issue was resolved within 24 hours.
