The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested five herbalists in Osun and Lagos States for allegedly possessing counterfeit foreign currencies worth $3.4 million and €280,000. The suspects, identified as Akingbola Omotayo, Adeola Funsho Ogunrinde, Yahaya Amodu, Kubratu Babalola Olaitan, and Familola Sunday Olaitan, were arrested at their shrines on December 7 and 8, 2025, following a thorough investigation into their activities.

According to reports, the herbalists allegedly defraud victims by promising spiritual cleansing and solutions to various ailments, claiming they can conjure large sums of money that require spiritual sacrifice and cleansing by a genie before spending. They hypnotized their victims into providing money for the supposed sacrifices.

The EFCC recovered counterfeit foreign currencies, two exotic cars, and mobile phones from the suspects. One victim, Halima Sanni, allegedly lost N26.55 million to the group.

The suspects will face charges in court once investigations are concluded. The EFCC is cracking down on financial fraud linked to spiritual and ritualistic practices.
