Nigerian military investigators have identified Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji as a key figure in a foiled coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Ma’aji allegedly orchestrated the scheme and financed parts of the operation, making him a central figure in the probe.

According to sources, Ma’aji coordinated planning and logistics, and was responsible for transferring funds to co-plotters. He’s linked to transactions involving Timi Sylva, former Bayelsa State governor, raising questions about possible civilian involvement. Sylva denies any involvement, calling himself a “thoroughbred democrat” who supported Tinubu.

Ma’aji, born March 1, 1976, in Niger State, has a strong operational background, having served in the Niger Delta and participated in Operation Crocodile Smile II. He’s been described as emotionally detached and unrepentant, with little cooperation with investigators.

The coup plot led to 16 officers being detained, and President Tinubu sacked several service chiefs, appointing Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff and retaining Emmanuel Undiandeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence. Christopher Musa, previously sacked, was later appointed Minister of Defence.
