A dramatic mix-up was averted on Wednesday when it was confirmed that former Nigerian Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, and not kidnapped as earlier reported.

The rumor of Ngige’s abduction had sent shockwaves through his political circle, with associates and supporters scrambling to confirm his whereabouts. His former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, was inundated with calls from concerned individuals, all seeking answers.

However, Chukwuelobe quickly dispelled the rumors, confirming that Ngige was in EFCC custody and safe. The confusion was sparked by a false report that spread rapidly online, causing unnecessary panic.

Ngige, a former Anambra State governor, has a history of facing corruption allegations. The EFCC had previously accused him of diverting funds meant for Anambra’s local governments during his tenure as governor. He was also questioned by the ICPC, with EFCC involvement, over alleged contract irregularities and job-related dealings at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund.

The EFCC has not officially commented on the arrest, but Ngige is expected to be arraigned on Friday, facing an eight-count charge related to alleged corruption and abuse of office.
