The Fusengbuwa Ruling House has postponed the nomination meeting for the vacant Awujale of Ijebuland stool, originally set for Monday, December 15, 2025. In a statement titled “To All Members of Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Ijebu-Ode,” the family cited “circumstances beyond their control” and apologized for any inconvenience.
But what’s behind the sudden halt? According to Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House and former ICAN president, the Ogun State Government stepped in to ensure the process follows the book – preventing potential legal battles down the line.
- Why the postponement? The state government summoned the ruling house, kingmakers, and Awujale Interregnum Committee to a Tuesday meeting to review procedures and align with existing laws.
- The stakes are high: A whopping 60 princes are vying for the throne left vacant by Oba Sikiru Adetona’s passing in July 2025 (age 91).
- No foul play, says ruling house: Owoyemi dismissed rumors linking the delay to Fuji legend KWAM1’s rejected lineage claim, stressing it’s purely about procedural checks.
- Next steps: A new nomination date will be announced post-government meeting. Strict protocols remain – only accredited family members allowed, candidates represented by nominees, peace mandatory.
The move aims to strengthen transparency and avoid litigation, says Prof. Fassy Yusuf, Vice Chairman of the ruling house. “We’re dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. This improves our standards.”
With Ijebuland’s traditions at stake, stakeholders urge neutrality and adherence to the Chiefs Law of 1957 guiding succession.
