The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is set to prosecute popular TikToker Habeeb Hamzat, aka Peller, after he threatened to kill himself while driving in a viral video – causing a near-fatal crash. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed called the stunt “unlawful and dangerous,” sparking fears it could’ve cost lives.
In a statement Monday, FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide said Mohammed directed Lagos State Sector Commander to start prosecution proceedings against Peller for reckless driving, using a phone while driving, and distracted driving – all violations of Nigeria’s traffic laws.
The FRSC boss isn’t mincing words. He blasted celebrities and influencers who break road rules for online clikes, warning they’re setting a toxic example for young Nigerians.
“Celebrities and influencers have HUGE sway with youth. They need to be safety ambassadors – not reckless role models,” the statement stressed.
The agency’s urging entertainment groups like Actors Guilds to step in and preach road safety to members. “It’s time influencers promoted responsibility, not danger,” FRSC added.
Peller’s wild drive has landed him in hot water. Will this push more celebs to think twice before breaking traffic rules for views? The case highlights Nigeria’s battle against risky driving habits – and social media’s part in it.
